How to Figure Out the Right Dock Size for Your Boat

One of the most critical decisions when docking your boat is determining the proper dock size. This might seem straightforward, but there are many factors at play that make it a bit more complex than simply matching dock length to boat length.

Whether you own a compact speedboat or a luxurious yacht, choosing the right dock ensures both ease of access and mooring, as well as safety and longevity for your watercraft.

To determine the best dock size for your boat, consider dock size and shape, boat slip size, and additional space for maneuvering and accessories. Read on to learn more!

Dock Length to Boat Length

While you might assume that the dock should be the same size as your boat, this is not always the case. A dock that is too short could make boarding and disembarking difficult, while one that is too long might take up unnecessary space and be more challenging to maintain.

While there are exceptions to everything, the general rule of thumb is that the dock should be around 2/3 the length of your boat. This ensures enough space for mooring and maneuvering while avoiding excessive dock space. For example, if your boat is 30 feet long, a 20-foot dock would be ideal. If you own a 50-foot vessel, then a dock length of about 33 feet would be more suitable for a larger boat.

However, the purpose, cost, location of the dock, and available shoreline space might influence and determine the final dock size.

Slip and Boat Size for Ease of Maneuvering

Another important consideration is the size or width of the boat slip. If you have a 22-foot boat, it doesn’t mean that the boat slip should be 22 feet long. You need extra room to maneuver the boat in and out of the slip. As another general rule of thumb, leave at least an extra 2 feet of space on either side for safe maneuvering and docking.

If you have multiple boats or jet skis, you’ll want to ensure enough space for all watercraft. Also, consider additional dock accessories, such as dock ladders or swim platforms, which may require extra space.

How Do You Plan to Use Your Dock?

Another vital aspect to consider is the purpose of your dock. This can significantly influence the size and shape you choose.

If your dock's sole purpose is to moor your boat, you can get away with a smaller size. Ensure it is large and deep enough to safely tie your boat while leaving enough room to board and exit easily.

You'll need a much larger dock if you want to use the dock for fishing, sunbathing, or hosting social gatherings. This type of dock will need sufficient and deep enough to accommodate your boat, furniture, accessories, and foot traffic.

Shoreline Considerations

Every shoreline is unique, and the specific characteristics of your property will also affect dock size. The water depth, type of shoreline (rocky, sandy, flat, or grassy), strong winds, robust waves, and tidal fluctuations can dictate the best dock size and placement. Ensure your dock is suitable for your shoreline and complies with local environmental and regulatory standards.

Dock Shape and Layout

Once you’ve decided on the size, the next step is choosing the best dock shape for your needs. Some popular configurations include:

  • Straight dock: Simple and ideal for small spaces and boats.
  • L-shaped or T-shaped docks: These are perfect if you want additional space for fishing or seating. They also work well in areas with larger boats.
  • U-shaped dock: Offers the most space and flexibility, providing docking space for multiple boats and additional room for recreational activities.

Working Dock: AccuDock® Work Floats

Perhaps you’re looking for a different dock solution to work on your boat using a platform in the water. At Haven Dock & Marine, we offer the AccuDock® work floats. AccuDock® Work Floats are portable platforms designed to streamline watercraft maintenance tasks and weigh just 65 lbs. for easy transport. With an AccuDock® Work Float, you can create a customized dock tailored to your unique needs and space requirements; you can truly make whatever shape and size you want.

Dock Materials and Durability

Choosing the right material for your dock is as essential as the size. Docks built from high-quality materials tend to last longer, require less maintenance, and can add value to your waterfront property.

Composite deck boards are a great choice for a traditional dock. Composite decking materials are a great option due to their durability, low maintenance, and resistance to weathering. Composite materials do not splinter or rot like traditional wood, making them ideal for long-term use in marine environments.

Bow and Stern Lines

You may now wonder about your dock lines. Bow and stern lines should be 2/3 the distance between the boat and the dock. Leave some extra slack in the lines to account for water level fluctuation and movement from strong winds, waves, and the tide. Spring lines should be about the same length as the boat.

If you have a larger boat or dock in a place with surge, you'll need a larger size line; if you have bad weather or windage, it's a good idea to double your dock lines.

Pilings For Your Dock

You'll want to consider what pilings to get that match the size of your dock; a larger diameter piling is needed for a heavier dock, like a commercial dock. The length of the pilings you choose also depends on the water depth and your preferred dock height. Piling material can also affect the dock's size. For example, pressure-treated lumber is common for pilings; steel or concrete is durable for strong water currents; and composite pilings are simple to work with. Additionally, piling caps can increase your pilings' longevity by protecting the pilings from exposure to harsh elements and seawater.

If you need help determining what you need, the team at Haven Dock & Marine can help you choose the size of the required pilings for your dock project.

Dock Accessories and Features

Once you have your dock size and layout sorted out, you can look at some fun add-ons to make your dock more functional and enjoyable.

Ladders

No dock would be complete without a ladder. Essential for swimming or easy access to smaller boats like kayaks and jet skis, there are a ton of options out on the market.

Haven Dock & Marine has a wide array of dock ladders, depending on what's most important to you:

  • Floating Dock Lift Ladders: A retractable ladder attaches right to your dock, making it easy to get in and out of the water. The great thing about floating dock lift ladders is that they rise and fall with the water. Our award-winning, patented FloatStep® Dock Ladder has a unique design for safe and simple access at any water level, adjusting to the tide, floating docks, and seawalls.
  • Stationary Dock Ladders: A stationary dock ladder, or straight ladder, is bolted right onto your structure, offering steady access to the water every time. It’s one of our most popular options because the marine-grade aluminum construction and efficient design mean you won’t run into any weight concerns, and it can withstand what the water brings.
  • Swing Dock Ladders: Swing dock ladders easily flip up and out of the water when not in use, which helps prevent marine growth and corrosion. They're lovely for stationary docks, boating decks, and floating docks.
  • Standard Marine-Grade Aluminum Lift Ladders: Our standard lift ladder provides specific support for lifting and dropping to meet height requirements and keep your dock and boats safe. It's perfect for a growing marina that wants to support a wide range of vessels and guests.
  • Finger Pier Dock Ladders: Unlike traditional dock ladders, finger pier ladders are designed to take up as little space as possible on both the top of the deck and along the side so that even your narrowest walkways can be safe and accessible at the same time. Haven Dock & Marine offers both a straight or lift ladder design.

Dock Bumpers

Every boat owner wants to protect their vessel from potential damage while mooring. If the boat isn’t fixed on the dock lines and properly cushioned, motion due to winds could easily cause damage to the delicate parts of the boat. To avoid damage to your boat, you want a protective cushion around the boat, the dock, or both to guard against direct contact, friction, or collision with other boats and dock parts.

Haven Dock & Marine is proud to be the sole manufacturer and distributor of the best dock fenders on the market: FEND-ALL® and FEND-OFF® dock fenders. With an exclusive double-wall design, superior absorption, durable UV-stabilized PVC, and a patented design for exceptional performance, they give unparalleled protection for your dock and boats in harsh marine environments.

From dock corner bumpers to dock fenders to concrete pile fenders, Haven Dock & Marine offers numerous options for ultimate protection. Many products also provide a warranty for peace of mind!

Boat Lifts

These are convenient and great for keeping your boat out of the water when not in use, preventing damage from prolonged exposure.
