Frequently Asked Questions
If you're considering adding piling caps to your dock, you may have questions about installation and measurement. To help, we've compiled some FAQs and answers:
How Do You Measure for Your Piling Caps?
Measuring for piling tops is a straightforward process that will give your dock a professional appearance.
There are two ways to measure the pilings:
Method 1: Determine the Diameter
- Make sure the pilings are at the desired height. Before measuring your piling caps, you'll need to make any final cuts.
- Take a couple of diameter measurements to the top of the pile and pass through the center point.
- For your piling measurements, use the largest measurement.
- For each pile, write down the measurement.
Method 2: The String Method
- Make sure the pilings are at their ideal height. Perform any final cuts before measuring the piling caps.
- Tie a length of string around the top of your pile, where the piling cap would go, to make sure it's tight but not too tight.
- Measure or cut out the length of the string.
- Use a measuring tape to determine the length of the string.
- Divide the length of the string (circumference) by 3.14159 (pi) to determine the diameter of your pile.
- For each pile, write down the measurement.
Remember, it is essential to measure every pile when you have measurements, as the cap size of each pile differs. If your measurements are incompatible with a piling cap's length, pick up the larger size to ensure you have an appropriate fit.
What Do Piling Caps Do?
Piling caps protect docks from weather and marine life damage while enhancing a finished look. Besides adding protection, piling caps can also improve the aesthetics of your dock.
Piling caps come in various shapes and sizes, and choosing the right one for your dock is crucial. They also come in different materials, such as plastic, metal, and wood, and you can choose a color that complements your dock's design.
How Do You Install Piling Caps?
To enhance the appearance of your dock and to protect the top of your dock pilings from damage caused by weather and marine life, the installation of piling caps is a simple process.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install piling caps:
- Piling caps
- Screws or nails (appropriate for your pile material)
- Drill or hammer
- Screwdriver or hammer
Step 1: Pre-drill Holes in Your Piling Caps
- Pre-drill three or four perfectly parallel holes down the bottom of the cap before installation of the piling caps. It will allow the cap to be safely secured.
Step 2: Place the Piling Cap onto the Pile
- To cover nearly an inch of the top of the stack, put a piling cap at the center of the pile. Check it's tight enough to fit.
Step 3: Screw or Nail the Piling Cap onto the Pile
- Screw the piling cap onto the pile, using three screws for round piling caps, but not too tight as it can affect the shape and look.
Step 4: Repeat for the Remaining Piling Caps
- Repeat the process with each remaining piling cap to ensure it fits tightly and is properly attached to the pile.
Step 5: Install Piling Cap Lights (Optional)
- Install them according to the instructions given by the manufacturer when you use a mounting cap light. For solar piling cap lights, install them at intervals of six feet to avoid the light of one affecting the solar sensor of another.
These guidelines will ensure the proper and safe installation of the piling caps, increasing the value of the dock and protecting it from the elements.
