HOW MANY DOCK FLOATS DO I NEED?

Most floating dock systems need one dock float for every 4–5 square feet of platform. But the actual number depends on how much weight your dock needs to support—and how you plan to use it.

  • Estimate Your Dock Floats:

    1. Measure your dock
Multiply length x width to get total square footage.
      Example: 10 ft x 12 ft = 120 sq ft
    2. Estimate the total load
Multiply that number by 35 lbs to account for both the dock structure and typical use.
      Example: 120 sq ft x 35 lbs = 4,200 lbs
    3. Check float capacity
Divide the total weight by the float’s rated buoyancy.
      Example: 4,200 lbs ÷ 470 lbs = ~9 floats
    4. Round up
Always round up—more flotation is better than not enough.

Real-World Factors to Consider

  • Heavy materials (like composite decking) need more support.
  • Rough water or heavy traffic? Add extra buoyancy for stability.
  • Float placement matters—every corner and span should be supported.
  • Uniform float types help avoid a lopsided dock.
